BHP Billiton Petroleum unveils plans for Post Oak tower

At a press conference facing an empty 24-Hour Fitness building, BHP Billiton Petroleum confirmed Monday it will build a 30-story tower to house its global headquarters at 1500 Post Oak Blvd. on the lot where the fitness center is located.

BHP Billiton Petroleum's new global headquarters will stand 30 stories tall and will house about 2,000 to 3,000 employees in the Four Oaks Place complex.

Houston Business Journal first revealed the plans after obtaining a company email about the project back earlier this month.

The structure, which will have 560,000 rentable square feet, will consolidate the company’s U.S. employees — now scattered in 4 Oaks Place, downtown Houston and Tulsa, Okla.

BHP Billiton Petroleum currently has 1,800 employees in Houston and plans to have about 3,000 in the new structure by the time it is completed in October 2016. The company is a subsidiary of Australian oil giant BHP Billiton Group.

The company will be the sole tenant in the new building. Construction is expected to begin in November this year.

Other features of the building, designed by New Haven, Conn.-based Pickard Chilton Architects Inc. with help from San Francisco-based Gensler’s Houston office, will be a skybridge that connects the new building to the 1360 Post Oak tower, LEED certification and a garage roof garden.

BHP Billiton Petroleum Chief Executive Mike Yeager did not disclose the cost of the building.

The developer for the project is Houston-based Transwestern, who also does the leasing for 4 Oaks Place. TIAA-CREF owns the building and a general contractor has not yet been selected for the project.
