New downtown hotel to break ground amid growing Super Bowl excitement

As momentum for Houston’s Super Bowl heats up, the new convention center Marriott Marquis will break ground April 11, officials confirmed Wednesday.

Rida Development Corp., Marriott International and the Houston First Corp. made the date official, after it was first announced in December.

The $335 million, 1,000-room hotel is expected to open in 2016. It will be across the street from the George R. Brown Convention Center, and the facilities will connect via pedestrian skybridges.

“We share in the excitement of our partners, Rida and Marriott,” Houston First President and CEO Dawn Ullrich said in a statement. “The breaking of ground on this project is a dream come true for all of us.

“One of the key drivers in this entire process is the 2017 Super Bowl. It’s everyone’s intention to have the new Marriott Marquis open for business when the big game rolls into town in three years, as we did 10 years ago when (Houston’s first convention center hotel, the Hilton Americas-Houston) opened in December 2003 and we hosted the Super Bowl in January 2004.”

The 2017 Super Bowl has been spurring a lot of momentum among Houston First and other groups that market the city. Houston Business Journal recently reported that Houston First and the Greater Houston Convention and Visitors Bureau are in discussions about the best way to work together to promote the city.

Additionally, Houston First is working on the biggest transformational project for downtown since Discovery Green. The project is not approved yet, but it would create a pedestrian-friendly area with restaurant and retail space adjacent to the George R Brown. That project is also targeting a 2016 completion date.
