Ten apartment complexes on tap for downtown

Ten apartment complexes are under construction or planned for downtown Houston.

There are approximately 4,000 people living downtown, according to Bob Eury, executive director of the Downtown Management District, and that number will increase by 7,500 once the new units come on line over the next few years.

He credits new jobs, a strong economy and the Downtown Living Initiative for attracting so many new high rise projects to the area.

The Houston City Council approved an expansion of the Downtown Living Initiative on April 16 that doubles the number of residential units that can receive a tax break. The city originally passed the Downtown Living Initiative Chapter 380 Program in 2012 to attract developers with tax breaks of $15,000 per multifamily unit built in downtown Houston.

The cap has been expanded from 2,500 to 5,000 residential units, which means the total cost of the subsidies could reach $75 million.

Here is a list of current projects on the books. All but one, 500 Crawford, are receiving funds from the Downtown Living Initiative.
